• Camping In Lewis & Clark Recreational Area

I woke up early next day, even before sunrise. See, I am improving ๐Ÿ™‚ . Last night was very comfortable. While Harmit was still sleeping, I came out of the cabin to have a look on the surroundings. What was pitch black yesterday, was complete white now. Our cabin was lake facing, it was so beautiful around it, lake was fully frozen. Soon sun started rising from the horizon making, the atmosphere charming. I captured those moments in my camera.

    Beautiful Sunrise

    Cabin C

Once Harmit got ready, we looked for toilet facility in the park. Disposable toilet was few steps away from our cabin, regular toilets with warm water were locked for the season. We decided to have breakfast in a nearby restaurant. Post breakfast, we stopped at a gas station and purchased firewood for the night. Once back, we decided to explore the place and what’s better than hiking for that.

Now we can see some people in the park, most of them hiking on the trail. Atmosphere was also too good, very bright and warm. Trail was just in front of our cabin and it was covered with snow in some places, but overall was quiet manageable.

    Ready For Hike

We made sure to wear proper winter gear along with snow boots. I kept my camera while Harmit was with binoculars. Since it was a sunny day, we were able to enjoy the hike. There was no path from our cabin to the trail directly and whole area in-between was covered with snow. So we had to start the trail from the point near disposable toilet. We had to walk on snow before coming to the proper trail. It was too much ice.

    Frozen Missouri

I had forgotten my gloves in the cabin, so had to go back to collect them. We were not far away from the cabin, So Harmit continued her walk, while I went to cabin. I took her photo from the cabin, walking alone in the quietness.

    Walking Alone

Once I joined her, we hiked at a slow pace, admiring the beauty of the nature around us. It was exactly what we wanted from this vacation. Once we reached at a certain point, quiet far from our cabin, we decided to return. We came back from the same path and I took many pictures through my camera. Hike took around 2.5 hour in total.

Once back, we went inside cabin and had some snacks. As I said, there was too much snow, we decided to fulfill our dream – to make snowman. LOL, we never got any chance to create snowman, mainly due to our laziness and somewhat due to hesitation to go outside in cold. Here was the chance for us and we utilized it. Harmit used my beanie and bandana to decorate it. She also used water bottle caps. marking them with her red nail-polish for its eyes and mouth. It was cute.

    Cute Snowman

    Back To Our Cabin

    Blissful

We took some photographs and prepared for the evening. Plan was to enjoy the night in outdoor. We setup our firewood in the grill area. Fire started easily without having to use too much oil. I bought portable chairs from the car. We prepared “Indian” tea in the open and grilled some cottage cheese. Feeling was just awesome to be in wilderness with bright stars all around us.

    Indian Tea

    Finally Done !

It was very cold and smoke was causing problem to the eyes. Once our tea was done, we went inside and watched an episode of our ongoing series on Netflix. Next day we had to leave for Omaha, so we slept early with feeling of satisfaction and gratitude. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Tips :-

    1. Bring plenty of water for the stay and don’t keep it in car.
    2. Bring comforters and bedsheets.
    3. Disposable toilet are available, regular ones are off for the season.
    4. Firewoods are not available in the park. They can be purchased from any gas station or Safeway.
    5. There is no bathing facility available for the season.

  • First Road Trip Of 2021

First day of year 2021 must be celebrated in some remote, secluded and quiet place, that was the plan. We wanted to enjoy the time in outdoors while avoiding crowd. Just 3 days before the new year’s day, we decided to go for cabin-camping.

We searched the state parks near Omaha first, but all were pre-booked. Then we widened our search area to Nebraska state, that too in vain. You can’t expect to get cabins at the last moment, that too during this time of the year. With little hope, we searched for cabins in neighboring states. To our luck, in Lewis and Clark Recreational Area, Yankton, South Dakota, we got some cabins available. We were overjoyed.

We booked an electric cabin online from their site for 2 nights.

Next day we got call from the park manager regarding the directions and other useful information. We were told, that Visitor Center is closed during the period (New year’s Holiday) and we have to pick the keys from a box outside front door of Visitor Center. We packed our luggage and prepared whatever needed for the trip.

    Items for the Camping :-

    • Carry-on baggage
    • Water bottles
    • Food Items like bread, butter, basil pesto, Indian snacks, cottage cheese & biscuits

    • Utensils for tea and cooking
    • Strainer for tea
    • Green Tea bags
    • Salt, Black tea, Sugar, Cardamom and Cloves

    • Thermos
    • Snow boots & Slippers
    • Camera, Tripod and Accessories
    • Bedsheet
    • Blankets & Pillows

    • Portable Chairs
    • Laptop
    • Power Bank
    • Gloves & Caps
    • Charging cords
    • Torches
    • Swiss knife
    • Rechargeable hand warmer

On 1st January, we left for the place which was around 2.5 hours drive from our home. We wanted to leave early, but as usual got late and left at around 3:00 PM. We wanted to reach there before sunset as we didn’t want to be searching for the keys in the dark. We took one loo break in between during the sunset and I took some pictures from the parking lot.

    Sunset Beauty

    Colors of Nature

We reached there at around 6 PM and it was already dark. It took some time to find the place, it was very secluded and surrounded by deep darkness. There was too much snow in the area, paths inside recreational area were covered with snow. We parked our car at Visitor center and as instructed searched for an outside box for the keys. As instructed, in a box, an envelop with my name was present with keys of our cabin in it. There was also a form for the vehicle permit which one has to fill if he didn’t paid online. On the right side of Visitor center, there was firewood area which was closed for the season.

We drove for nearly 5 minutes looking for the signs of our campground. There seems to be no one in the park. We were actually welcomed by a deer who vanished quickly when we stopped to have a look of him. Finding our cabin was not so difficult, pathway to our cabin was cleaned. We parked our car and went to cabin. Cabin was well heated (extra heater was provided) and was equipped with a bunk bed, sofa, table and bench (all wooden) along with A/C. Cabin was lake facing but everything was too dark to reveal anything.

We unloaded almost everything from our car along with 2-4 water bottles. We arranged our belongings and prepared our bed. We were asked to bring our blankets and bedsheets. I was very tired, so I went to sleep. Harmit was not sleepy, she passed her time with Netflix.

I woke up after few hours due to excessive heat, she was still busy with the laptop. I drank water and felt refreshed due to the good sleep. We had some snacks and then I asked Harmit for night hike since she was having trouble in sleeping.

Initially she was reluctant to go for hike at that time, especially when we haven’t seen a single person there. But after I insisted, she agreed. We wore jackets, gloves and woolen caps and went for the hike with torches in hands . It was a bright night, with beautiful moon shining like a silver ball out there. I never hiked in night before, it was really exciting. There was complete silence, only noises were from our footsteps. An owl was also hooting somewhere, making this experience amazing. Sky was full of bright stars, I wanted to capture those moments, but I am not a good Night photographer.

An attempt to capture the beauty

We decided to return so as to get up early next day. My nose was also running due to cold. We came back to our cabin. This short hike took around 45 minutes, ahh ! those memorable-unique moments ๐Ÿ™‚ . Cabin was heated which was a great relief. We changed our clothes and retired to bed. We didn’t have to wait for the sleep to come, it came naturally. I was already dreaming of capturing this beauty in tomorrow’s day light.

We prefer cabin camping over conventional camping. What’s your pick ? Which one you prefer ?

  • We have been travelling together for over twenty years. Over the course of those years, we have learnt a thing or two. Some of our lessons have been โ€ฆ

Ten Things We Have Learnt From Our Travels
  • Zorinsky Lake In Winter

On our recent day-trip to Zorinsky Lake, Omaha , we got the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine while admiring the nature’s beauty. Temperature is on continuous decline and especially after few snow-storms, a day full of sunshine is nothing less than a blessing. Our only activity is within the apartment which is daily step goal (12000 steps) along with some occasional full body workout. It was time to come out of our cocoon.

I covered the park back in September, check this out . In September, while lake was flowing very quietly with elegance and was the prime attraction for boating and fishing, this time it was frozen and due to harsh sunlight, was melting from some points. It was still not ready for winter fun.

We threw some hard snow on the surface and compete with each other to make them reach farthest and they slipped smoothly over the surface. Here is a fun video of a snowball who slid on the surface before breaking into tiny balls :-

    Frozen Zorinskly Lake

Park was not that crowded, so it was quiet safe to hike. We used to cover our faces with masks, whenever we had to encounter someone on the trek. Most of the crowd was busy in hiking, running or cycling and I as usual busy with my camera. Harmit got bored due to my slow pace and started her jogging. I made sure, she doesn’t go too far from me. Due to the recent melting, there were beautiful patterns in the lake, depicting the intermixing of ice and water.

    Going away !

Main entrance of the park was also very less crowded. We went to the small fishing dock. No one was fishing there and it was covered with snow. Lake was totally frozen across it, we again threw some snowballs on the lake surface and aimed for different directions. There was a particular area in the lake, very near from the dock, looking like crushed ice, like someone has crushed that part with hammer making it unique.

We had to return before sunset to our parking spot, so after taking pictures we headed back. We wanted to sit and watch sunset, so moved at a faster pace. On the way, I took multiple pictures with sun ready to go beyond horizon and spreading it rays one more time before being captured by darkness.

Unfortunately we couldn’t reach on time, so had to content with some post sunset shots. Anyways those shots were also beautiful and mesmerizing.

There is always an excitement when a month ends, just to see the picture on next month’s page. Calendars with pictures of nature and wildlife always fascinate me. Inspired by this, I created a calendar with my favorite shots from each month of 2020.

  • Goodreads Of 2020

When you are alone, there is no better friend than a Book. I always participate in Goodreads yearly challenges, but most of the time they remain unachieved. 2020 restricted us in our houses and away from our closed ones. This brought the opportunity to explore new dimensions of life. I was never a fan of digital media so Kindle was a big no for me, but eventually I had to accept it.

Libraries were closed and I was stuck in India during nationwide lockdown. I downloaded Kindle app and mobile was now my book store. I always preferred hardcovers, so it was tough to adjust initially, but soon I started enjoying it. Prime members get lots of free content and in addition to that I accidently opted for Kindle Unlimited (premium service with accessibility to more content), which was like a boon.

Libby app, whose reference I got from my library, also needs a big mention here. This app allows you to checkout Kindle/Libby compatible books from your library. Thus even though libraries were closed, I was able to borrow digital titles from there, that too from thousands of miles away.

My goal was of 45 books, but I exceeded it by 20 books, thus making total read titles as 65. Below is the list with ratings :-

  • December Through My Lenses

Here I am again with another post of previous month captured through my Sony lenses. Finally 2020 is gone, it started really bad due to COVID widespread, but in the end things seem to be in control. Everyone got a new perspective and we celebrated Christmas and New Year from our homes while being connected with our families & friends through various technologies available.

Omaha received a decent amount of snow during the month and it was really cold. We went outside on a sunny day and I took some pretty shots. Frozen lake, water and ice boundaries, ice and some evening shots are part of this month’s collection.

    Highlights from December :-

    • Evening hike to Zorinsky Lake park
    • Office stress
    • Read 8 books
    • Completed OPL (Omaha public library) reading challenge

Below are the pictures of the month :-

So which one of the above you liked most and why ? Suggestions and advices are always welcome.

  • Goodbye 2020

So it’s the last day of the year and we are so excited to welcome 2021. This year was little bumpy but in a way it gave an unique perspective of living. We learned to work from home comfortably while maintaining the productivity and got ample time to pursue our interests and hobbies.

We started HarpiyTravel in December 2019. I still remember the day when I was sitting in the office and was reading an article (I love reading books, news and articles), when the idea to start my own blog popped up. I searched the best options available for blogging, created an account on WordPress and purchased the domain along with suitable plan. I wasn’t sure how and where to start, so read few blogs to get an idea and wrote our first post.

First Post :- First Step in Blogging World !

We love travelling, so focus of the blog was to share our travel experience and helpful tips with you. As COVID emerged and travel almost halted, we were confused with the content to offer. Since Photography is my hobby, a new category was created for it. After writing many posts I started sharing my personal experiences and spiritual insights as well. Now this blog means a lot to us, thanks to you. Below are some statistic related to the blog :-

Total Posts this year :- 60 (including this post)
